Veterinarian Column: Preparing to welcome a cat

by Alice's Dog & Cat獣医師

Before welcoming a cat, you need to prepare in advance. Prepare a preparation list so you don't forget anything.

preparation list

◎ Tableware/drinking bowl

Prepare a small food container and a large, deep water container. Cats don't tend to drink much water, but if they don't drink too much water, they are susceptible to lower urinary tract disease. Choose tableware made of materials your cat likes, and make sure your cat always has access to fresh water.

◎ Food

Choose food that is labeled as a comprehensive nutritional food and is appropriate for your child's age. Dry food and wet food each have their own benefits. It's a good idea to have both available. If your dog suddenly changes their food, they may not eat it, so be sure to check the food they were originally eating at the place of adoption.

◎ Toilet, cat litter, deodorant

Choose a litter box that is at least 1.5 times the size of your cat and that can hold plenty of cat litter. The ideal number of litter boxes is the number of cats kept + 1. A litter box with a cover that prevents cat litter from scattering can trap odors and make your cat feel uncomfortable. A toilet without a cover is recommended. It is useful to have a deodorizing spray in case you are sprayed or treated rudely.

◎ Cage

Until your cat gets used to it, you can provide a cage and create a space where he can calm down, so he can feel at ease.

◎ Bed

Create a bed where you can sleep safely.

◎ Nail sharpener

Cats have a habit of sharpening their claws. Prepare a nail sharpener to prevent scratches from being scratched on furniture, etc.

◎ Cat Tower

Cats need up and down exercise. Cats also feel safer in higher places.

◎ Toys

It can be used in various situations such as stress relief, exercise, and play. Choose something that is strong and cannot be bitten into pieces, or one that is large enough that it cannot be swallowed whole. Some cats eat toys, so don't leave toys out to prevent them from accidentally ingesting them.

◎ Crate (carry bag)

You will need it when going to the hospital or evacuating from a disaster. Get used to it from an early age.

◎ Grooming goods

It will be helpful to have grooming brushes , nail clippers, etc. ready for cleaning. Grooming at home is important to prevent hairballs, which can cause hairballs to form in the stomach and obstruct the gastrointestinal tract, and to prevent hair loss.

*We recommend using a glue brush that does not easily damage the skin and can remove loose hair.

Environment preparation

Determine the area in which your cat can move, and install fences or other such measures in areas where the cat cannot enter. In particular, be sure to protect your entrance and windows with screens and fences to prevent them from escaping.
Put away anything that your cat might eat. Houseplants, plastic bags, medicines, cigarettes, strings, etc. that can cause poisoning if eaten.

Things to know before starting a pet

What is the lifespan of a cat? What are the lifetime costs? The average lifespan is 15 years, but can exceed 20 years. You need to make a decision that takes into account your own health and finances.
Where is the veterinary hospital located, and what days and hours are it open? You never know when a cat will become sick or injured, so be sure to check your family's veterinary hospital at night so that they can respond to emergencies.
